Choosing the right Childrens Mountain Bike

Children's bikes come in all sizes and shapes; children's mountain bikes generally come in one of two builds, full suspension or partial suspension. Suspension components are what cushion the ride over rough terrain, but the can sometimes weigh more, so those offering front and rear suspension (often called dual suspension or full suspension) are often best suited for older children.

When shopping for a kid's mountain bike, pay close attention to the age-group listed on the bike. You'll notice several different categories, from 4-6, 5-7, so on and so on. This is only meant to be a guideline. If a bike is too big, chances are they will grow into it shortly, but if it's too small, they may not ride it at all. Most bikes are adjustable enough to allow a child to ride them for several years before an upgrade is needed.

The next choice you need to make is how many gears are needed. Most bikes come with a standard 16 gears, they are more then enough to get children around the neighborhood, park or playground.

For the smallest riders, some mountain bikes come with training wheels already installed. This is a great, simple and effective way to teach your child how to ride properly. When they are ready to ride without them, simply unbolt them and let them go!

For the older riders, bikes suited with 24" tires should be adjustable enough for them to ride comfortably into their middle teens.

As with any activity, make sure that you go over everything when the kid's mountain bike arrives or take it to a trusted bicycling shop for a once over. Also make sure the children wear the appropriate protective gear and are always under supervision. The technology advances in kid's mountain bikes has enabled them to be safer, more fun and more attractive, setting up children for a lifelong, safe and fun hobby.
