Bicycle helmets come in a wide variety of styles, fits, features and colors', so choosing the right one is critical. Bike helmets come in four main styles:

Road helmets are designed for road cyclists. These helmets are lightweight, well ventilated and offer superior cooling. They usually do not include a visor since most road cyclists wear sunglasses. Mountain bike helmets are often very similar in shape to road helmets but include a visor. The visor is usually detachable, in case you have a run-in with a tree, and usually cover a little bit more around the back of your head and down your ears. Again, choosing a well-ventilated helmet will keep you cool through the day. Many road cyclists prefer to wear mountain bike helmets for no other reason then the built in visor.

Full-face helmets resemble motorcross style motorcycle helmets and offer superior coverage of the entire face; most have been designed to be worn with goggles, not sunglasses. These full-face helmets are the choice of BMX riders and downhill mountain bike racers. The tradeoff for most of them is the lack of venting; these helmets are not designed to be worn on 8-hour bike rides through the woods.

Kids helmets are designed to provide maximum protection of the entire head, coupled with a comfy chinstrap so the child is not annoyed while wearing it.

Colours and designs vary wildly, so choose whatever fits your personality best! Most road cyclists tend to choose bright colors to be more visible to motorist though.
